SIG-RME Graduate Student Book Club

SIG RME is continuing its exciting book club for graduate students this Fall! At the 2022 AERA Annual Conference, acclaimed author and scholar, Dr. April Baker-Bell addressed SIG RME members and asked us to consider and reflect on the ways language works to uphold whiteness and dominant perspectives on ‘proper English.’ To continue this mission, we will read Linguistic Justice: Black Language, Literacy, Identity, and Pedagogy. This book club aims to create a space for graduate students to meet and discuss this book and its implications for education, and more specifically, mathematics education. The group will meet three times throughout the Fall semester: end of September, end of October, and end of November. The exact dates will be set based on student interest and availability. Prior to each meeting time, participants will be asked to read a third of the book and come ready to discuss what resonated with them. Additionally, SIG RME may be able to provide assistance in purchasing the text for those who may need it to ensure equitable participation.

SIG-RME Graduate Representatives, Anita Sundrani and Brittany Marshall.
